Hoisting

Hoisting may be required to move items that cannot be disassembled and are too large to fit through the doorway. These items may sometimes be hoisted through a window or over a balcony. Many moving companies offer this service for an additional cost, but not all moving companies are licensed and insured to provide hoisting.
Before signing a contract, let the moving company know if you had any issue bringing furniture or appliances into the home. If certain items were already present when you moved in, you may need to measure them and ask a moving company representative if they will be able to move these items through a doorway. If it turns out that you will need hoisting services, figure this into your budget and ask moving companies about hoisting rates before comparing estimates. Some companies charge by the piece and some will provide you with a flat rate to cover all items that require hoisting. If you are not planning to hire a moving company to pack and load your belongings, you might consider hiring a company that specializes in hoisting to assist in moving large items. Hoisting specialists will have the right equipment and manpower to handle the job in the safest, most efficient way.

Do not be tempted by the low cost advertised by some companies until you have made sure that they have the proper licenses and insurance coverage. Hoisting can be a dangerous task and you do not want to be held responsible for any injuries to the company’s employees. Some moving companies may ask you to sign a release form before they will hoist items from your home. Carefully read and examine the release form and make sure that the company will not hold you responsible if they are injured due to their own errors.

Any item that you are planning to hoist should be thoroughly wrapped and protected with moving pads, to avoid damage to your home and to the item. Some movers may use ladders and ropes to slide an item to the ground, while other movers may use cranes or other specialized equipment. Do not forget to check the entrances to your new home as you may require hoisting services at both ends of the move.
