About North Carolina:

Virginia Dare was the first child born to English parents in America. She was born in 1587 in Sir Walter Raleigh’s ill-fated colony that settled in Roanoke Island off the coast of present day North Carolina. Roanoke Island sits off the Atlantic coast between the Croatan and the Roanoke sound.
In 1653, the first English settlements were established by colonists from Virginia near the Roanoke and Chowan rivers. The region was established as an English proprietary colony from 1663 until 1665 and in its early history was the scene of Culpepper’s Rebellion in 1677. In 1708, the Quaker-led “Cary Rebellion” occurred in North Carolina and the Tuscarora Indian War followed from 1711 to 1718.
During the American Revolution, there was relatively little fighting within the state, but many North Carolinians fought elsewhere in the country. Despite considerable pro-Union, antislavery sentiment, North Carolina joined the Confederacy during the Civil War until 1865.
North Carolina is the nation’s largest furniture, tobacco, brick, and textile producer. Metalworking, chemicals, and paper are also important in North Carolina’s manufacturing industry. The major agricultural products are tobacco, corn, cotton, hay, peanuts, and vegetable crops.
North Carolina for its many tourist locations and is famous for its sporting sites, including year-round golfing, skiing at mountain resorts, fresh- and salt-water fishing, and hunting. Among the major attractions are the Great Smoky Mountains (named for the smoke like haze that envelops them), The Blue Ridge National Parkway, the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, and the Creek National Military Park. Literary historians might also visit the home of American poet and biographer Carl Sandburg, famous for his collection of children’s books and poems.
