About Virginia:

Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America and was one of the first to introduce slavery in 1619. Both the American Revolution and the Civil War ended with historic treaties signed in Virginia. The state is called the “Mother of Presidents” because eight U.S. presidents were born there: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Thomas Woodrow Wilson.
Today, Virginia’ service sector provides one-third of all jobs in Virginia, generating as much income as the manufacturing and retail industries combined. By 1999 Virginia’s service industry accounted for more than 23% of gross state product. Agriculture remains an important state resource, and the state ranks among the top ten in a variety of agricultural products including tomatoes, tobacco, peanuts, apples, summer potatoes, sweet potatoes, snap beans, and turkeys. Virginia also has a large dairy industry and is one of the top ten coal producers in the U.S.
